Changelog

Weekly COPE release notes for developer-facing checkout, webhook, and integration updates.

2026-10-02

Week of October 2

Documentation

  • The Checkout SDK examples now match what cope-sdk 0.1.0 sends: setBuyerIdentity() takes country and postal_code at the top level (not inside tax_location), and getProduct() takes the product’s prod_ ID, with product.uuid as a line’s product_id. The overview now states that plan and cart line IDs on the cart API are integers, that plan amounts named *_cents are decimal strings in major units, and the shape of the cart API’s error body. See Checkout SDK overview.
  • createPrefilledCheckout() is documented: its input, the idempotency key it derives from your reference, and who can call it. See Prefilled checkout.
  • POST /v1/commerce/payments/{id}/refunds now lists every code it can refuse with, including insufficient_seller_balance, explains the seller-balance rule, and states that a refused refund is not stored against its Idempotency-Key, so the same request can be retried later under the same key.

Week of September 28

New

  • The Checkout SDK is on npm as cope-sdk 0.1.0. It includes cope-sdk/mcp, an MCP endpoint you mount on your own server so a buyer’s AI agent can build a cart in your store and hand the buyer a checkout link. See MCP for AI shopping agents.
  • Every webhook delivery’s envelope gains occurred_at: when COPE recorded the event, to the millisecond, repeated unchanged by every retry and replay — while created_at stays the time of each attempt. Use it to judge freshness; it is not a strict order. A receiver that rejects unknown envelope keys must now accept occurred_at. See Event envelope.
  • cope-mcp 0.1.0 is on npm: an MCP server you run on your own computer so Claude, Cursor or another MCP client can read your store with your API key, and make changes you confirm when you turn them on. See MCP server for your store.

Changes

  • Checkout SDK cope-sdk 0.2.0 renames its class to Cope: import { Cope } from "cope-sdk", and new Cope({...}) with the global build too. CopeCart stays exported as a deprecated alias of the same class, so 0.1.0 code keeps working unchanged. See Checkout SDK.
  • POST /v1/commerce/products now creates the product with status: active (previously inactive), the same as a product created in the dashboard. approval_status is still review, and the product cannot be bought until COPE approves it. Unchanged: a later PATCH /v1/commerce/products/{id} or image/attachment upload on a product that is not approved still sets it back to inactive and review.
  • A product awaiting approval (approval_status review, denied or denied_changed) now reads as not purchasable before checkout. getProduct returns purchasable: false with purchase_block_reason: "pending_approval" (previously true / "none"), and addLine refuses it with not_saleable and block_reason: "pending_approval". Previously both calls succeeded and checkout then refused the cart with product_unavailable, which checkout still returns for such a product. The buyer product response no longer carries denial_reason.

Fixes

  • Fixed the webhook signing documentation, which told you to recreate an endpoint to get a new signing secret. Rotate it in place with POST /v1/webhooks/endpoints/{id}/secret-rotations; the old secret stops verifying at once, with no overlap. See Rotating the signing secret.
  • Documented how to sell at a price decided per buyer, including a recurring one: a catalogue checkout sells the prices your payment plans define, and an offer (POST /v1/commerce/offers) prices one product for one named buyer. Offers do not accept metadata or external_reference yet. See Prices: payment plans and offers.

2026-09-21

Week of September 21

New

  • Thank-you pages now receive the same parameters on every payment method: your checkout metadata as one metadata[<key>] parameter per key, affiliate when the buyer came through an affiliate link, and order, the order ID. The URL is kept within 2,000 characters, with metadata_truncated=true when a key had to be left out. See Your own reference on an order.
  • cart.order.completed now names the subscription each subscription line bought, as line_items[].subscription with its ps_ ID: the ID the subscriptions API accepts, and the one every subscription.* event and payment.sale.succeeded carry. It is left out on one-time and installment lines.
  • POST /v1/commerce/subscriptions/{id}/plan now accepts a plan on another billing cycle — monthly to yearly, or every three months — as long as it is on the same product and in the same currency. The period the buyer already paid for is kept: nothing is charged until pending_change.effective_at, and the new cycle starts there. The subscription stays active throughout, with the new plan and its cadence in pending_change.plan until that renewal bills it. plan_not_available is no longer answered for a different interval or interval count.

Changes

  • The thank-you URL’s order ID is now order (previously order_id), and order_uuid is no longer added. Read order on your thank-you page.
  • Every subscription operation — retrieve, and the price, plan, pause, resume and cancel writes — now answers one Subscription object: id, object, a closed status, the business, order and line_item it belongs to as {object, id}, the plan and amount_cents in force, currency, next_billing_at, paused_at, cancel_at, cancelled_at, created_at, and pending_change for a price or plan change waiting for the next renewal. The writes no longer return the attempt, and the subscription no longer carries latest_change.
  • A subscription’s price or plan change is its pending_change until a renewal bills the new terms, on every payment method, and effective_confirmed_at on the change-list entry records that renewal. A renewal that bills nothing (a 100% discount) does not count.
  • Entries of GET /v1/commerce/subscriptions/{id}/changes gain created_at, name plans as plan: {object, id} instead of plan_id, carry failure only on a failed entry, and no longer carry subscription_id or requested_by.
  • A subscription’s plan.id now names the plan it was sold on from the start, not only after a plan change, and GET /v1/commerce/subscriptions/{id}/changes names the plan on both sides of an entry where it is recorded. The subscription.plan_changed webhook’s old_plan is now filled the same way. The id is null when no recorded fact names the plan — for example, a subscription sold through an offer, a plan since deleted from the product, or one sold before plans were recorded.
  • A subscription’s plan reference now names its object payment_plan (previously plan), the name the subscription.plan_changed webhook already uses. This applies to plan and pending_change.plan on the Subscription object, and to from.plan and to.plan on GET /v1/commerce/subscriptions/{id}/changes. The field names and the plan_… ID are unchanged.

Week of September 7

New

  • Added PayPal support for eligible installment-plan checkout and one-time trial checkout, so buyers can use PayPal for the first payment or trial authorization while COPE keeps the authorization needed for the later charge.
  • Added checkout metadata to cart.order.completed webhook events, helping integrations correlate completed COPE orders with their own checkout sessions.
  • Added finance visibility for vendor-managed promoter commissions, including a balance memo, per-payment reconciliation, and clearer order-level settlement context.

Updates

  • Improved direct checkout payment-plan presentation with selected-plan terms, installment schedules, VAT-inclusive amounts, amount-aware pay buttons, and steadier completed-checkout recovery.
  • Improved PayPal checkout with a cleaner button handoff, clearer declined-payment guidance, trial totals that show 0.00 due today, one buyer-facing message for PayPal payment failures, and payment-method details on trial success pages.
  • Improved PayPal subscription payment updates so each subscription can keep its own PayPal account and overdue subscriptions retry promptly after the buyer updates PayPal.
  • Improved checkout success pages for one-time trials with clearer no-payment-yet messaging, scheduled charge details, and localized wording across supported languages.
  • Improved business team access so invited admins can work in the selected business after accepting an invitation, while businesses still control whether Team settings are available.
  • Improved buyer email validation by rejecting undeliverable addresses before payment and preventing permanent email delivery failures from being retried indefinitely.
  • Improved order confirmation and invoice emails with simpler confirmation actions, clearer total labels, gross shipping amounts, and localized payment terms on invoice lines.
  • Improved checkout and product setup for countries without postal systems, so supported buyers and creators are not blocked by a postal-code field their country does not use.
  • Improved Growth Hub commission calculations so vendor-managed promoter commissions use a consistent net basis for eligible sales and refunds.

Fixes

  • Fixed checkout so buyers can switch payment methods after abandoning one payment attempt.
  • Fixed PayPal checkout details so PayPal receives one row per purchased line item with the buyer’s selected quantity.
  • Fixed checkout loading states to avoid layout jumps while direct checkout is preparing payment options.
  • Fixed withdrawal decision emails so buyers see either the approved or rejected outcome, instead of contradictory decision text.
  • Fixed post-purchase one-click offers so eligible buyers who gave consent can see the offer after checkout succeeds.

2026-08-31

Week of August 31

New

  • Added business team access, so business owners can invite team members, manage pending invitations, and let trusted admins work in the business without sharing the owner’s login.
  • Added public Commerce API offer writes for creating, sending, resending, and cancelling offers, including documented retry behavior for idempotent offer creation.
  • Added public Commerce API refund creation at POST /v1/commerce/payments/{id}/refunds, allowing integrations to create full or partial refunds through the documented API.

Updates

  • Improved checkout entry points by enabling direct checkout across supported flows, refining the mobile checkout footer, and making installment totals clearer before payment.
  • Improved PayPal checkout with clearer buyer-facing errors, the official PayPal monogram, faster button readiness, stronger seller capability checks, and safer returning-buyer context.
  • Improved Growth Hub partnership onboarding with clearer promoter invitation, acceptance, activation, and post-registration recognition flows.
  • Improved community calendar and challenge experiences with steadier month navigation, a more consistent create-event modal, and translated challenge strings across supported locales.
  • Improved BNPL availability by letting Stripe apply its own eligibility checks for automatic checkout methods while preserving COPE’s checkout safeguards.

Fixes

  • Fixed buyer emails and order views so course access instructions and multi-quantity installment or subscription amounts match the purchase.
  • Fixed product setup so new physical products are no longer offered while existing physical-product checkout, subscription, and renewal flows continue to work.
  • Fixed payment-plan validation so unsupported plan positions are rejected cleanly instead of failing during save.

2026-08-24

Week of August 24

New

  • Added Venmo as an eligible PayPal checkout option for supported USD purchases, with wallet-specific confirmation details and saved Venmo authorization for eligible recurring carts.
  • Added community module controls, so community admins can choose which surfaces such as Members, Calendar, Challenges, Leaderboards, Courses, and Library are shown and reachable in each community.
  • Added the applied tax rate to Phone Offer price calculations, helping creators explain the tax amount quoted to a buyer.

Updates

  • Improved PayPal checkout so selecting PayPal takes the buyer directly to PayPal, checkout cancellation no longer appears as a failed payment, and confirmation pages show wallet and address details when they apply.
  • Improved PayPal seller controls with clearer account readiness messages, safer disconnect handling, and refund actions that follow the seller’s current PayPal capabilities.
  • Improved PayPal refunds by supporting partial refunds and showing a clear insufficient-balance response when PayPal rejects a refund for that reason.
  • Updated the public Commerce API contract to match live gateway behavior, including dashboard and webhook identifier formats, documented error responses for invalid inputs, media-upload requirements, and fields already accepted or returned by the API.
  • Improved the payments list for reconciliation: each payment now returns created_at (the sale timestamp) alongside cash_flow_at (when funds became available), the list accepts created_from/created_to and cash_flow_from/cash_flow_to date-range filters plus an exact-match buyer_email filter, and per_page on this endpoint now accepts values up to 100 (previously 25).
  • Improved checkout availability for installment plans and non-card payment methods, so eligible buyer options remain visible when a seller has opted into installments or payment capabilities are still loading.

Fixes

  • Fixed buyer portal routing so course buyers who have not completed creator onboarding can access purchased courses instead of being sent through creator setup.
  • Fixed entitlement grants so completed orders grant access regardless of whether the buyer returns through the immediate checkout path or the completion webhook.
  • Fixed checkout repricing safeguards so buyers do not complete payment against an outdated seller price.
  • Fixed transactional emails so order confirmations, invoice emails, and refund confirmations label and display the order ID consistently.
  • Fixed creator setup details across KYC capability alerts, product-card copy messages, optional payment-plan fields, course deadline validation, promo-code creation dates, and Phone Offer plan editing.

2026-08-17

Week of August 17

New

  • Enabled the documented read endpoints for orders, payments, refunds, and invoices: GET /v1/commerce/orders, /payments, /refunds, /invoices, plus retrieve by id for each. Existing API keys work unchanged — no new key, no settings change, no migration is needed.
  • The commerce reference now lists only operations the gateway actually serves; endpoints that are implemented but not yet publicly routed are withheld from the sidebar until they ship.
  • The order list returns completed orders only; draft, pending, and failed checkouts are not exposed. All four lists paginate with page and per_page (maximum 25; larger values are clamped) and return a pagination object with total_pages, current_page, per_page, and total_count. A page number beyond the last page returns the last page, so iterate until current_page equals total_pages rather than until data is empty.

2026-08-11

Week of August 11

New

  • Added paid community memberships, giving creators a full community create/edit flow, buyer checkout for paid access, automatic membership grants after purchase, and access removal when an eligible withdrawal or subscription end applies.
  • Added community gamification settings, including a dedicated settings page and master toggle for community points.
  • Added emailed sign-in codes as a supported second factor for new-device verification, so eligible users can complete sign-in without a separate authenticator or SMS factor.
  • Added PayPal subscription price changes, so creators can update the recurring amount for eligible active PayPal subscriptions.
  • Added a standalone VAT liability addendum page with in-portal reminders when a creator needs to re-accept current terms before liability transfer can apply.

Updates

  • Improved checkout confirmation pages for trials, active subscriptions, cancelled subscriptions, and subscriptions ending after the paid-through period, so buyers see accurate charge and access information.
  • Improved product and checkout presentation for trials and multi-quantity orders, including trial badges before checkout, visible quantities in checkout and order views, and quantity-aware subscription amounts.
  • Improved promo-code setup with clearer guidance for discounts in other currencies and a warning when a fixed discount only applies to the base currency.
  • Improved Phone Offer setup by disabling empty currency selections and explaining when settlement onboarding is needed before pricing becomes available.
  • Improved Promotions views by scoping promoter links, products, product stats, and order context to the selected business.
  • Improved PayPal subscription reliability across trial conversion, renewal charging, seller capability sync, and recurring charge diagnostics.
  • Improved payout resilience so reconciliation issues are isolated and payout requests return clear status instead of unnecessarily blocking unrelated sellers.
  • Updated COPE branding in the cart app and public API reference.
  • Updated email footer legal links so Terms and Privacy destinations resolve to the current www.cope.com legal pages.
  • Updated buyer-facing COPE links in receipt and recovery surfaces to use current cope.com and app.cope.com destinations.

Fixes

  • Fixed re-sent promoter invites so vendors can resend an invite to an existing COPE user and see the resend cooldown clearly.
  • Fixed affiliate transaction views so vendors and promoters see aligned revenue, commission, status, transaction IDs, and last-sale context for the same partnership.
  • Fixed promo-code creation and editing so duplicate codes show a specific field-level rejection instead of a generic failure.
  • Fixed promoter commission and product-stat reporting so earnings appear under the correct affiliate profile and incoming amounts do not stay hidden after invite acceptance.
  • Fixed BNPL checkout for shipped orders so complete buyer location details keep eligible payment methods available through confirmation.
  • Fixed checkout payment submission so buyers are not blocked by address requirements for a payment method they did not choose.
  • Fixed checkout address validation so a delayed postal-code lookup from a previous country cannot overwrite the new billing address.
  • Fixed multi-quantity subscription and installment totals so order KPIs, reminder amounts, schedule entries, and renewal charges match the quantity the buyer purchased.
  • Fixed first-payment-only promo codes on subscriptions so recurring amounts return to the full undiscounted tax basis after the first charge.
  • Fixed checkout safeguards so unsupported zero-value or below-minimum purchases cannot complete as paid transactions.
  • Fixed product creation and editing details across localized placeholders, German creator copy, thank-you-page tooltips, narrow plan cards, location autocomplete, and product-required validation for promoter invites.
  • Fixed checkout address autocomplete accessibility and modal behavior, including portalled suggestions that remain visible and attached to the correct field.

  • Improved affiliate invite emails with clearer collaboration copy, vendor identity, localized guidance, and per-product affiliate links when product-specific promotion is available.

  • Improved creator setup by preselecting the business country from the visitor’s region when it is supported, while preserving any manual selection.

  • Fixed product setup safeguards so unsupported tax codes cannot be saved and payment-plan numbers stay within supported bounds.

  • Fixed sign-in and sign-up controls so email and SSO submissions show progress and avoid duplicate password-alternative submissions.
  • Fixed creator KYC messaging so creators do not receive false account-paused emails.

  • Improved PayPal onboarding recovery so creators who disconnect and reconnect PayPal can complete verification without stale onboarding sessions or unnecessary popup windows.
  • Improved PayPal checkout safeguards by hiding PayPal where recurring, installment, or trial billing cannot be supported, and by closing checkout availability when a seller can no longer receive PayPal payments.
  • Improved affiliate promotion reporting so link, promo-code, and phone-offer sales stay in the right attribution views, promoter share links use stable attribution IDs, and incoming commissions appear in the correct payout currency.
